‘Iron Man 4’ Cancellation: Robert Downey, Jr. To Star In ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ Instead? Actor’s Fee May Be Too High For Marvel

Iron Man fans all over the world are awaiting official news of "Iron Man 4," the potential fourth installment to Marvel's lucrative "Iron Man" film series. Though it has been more than three years since "Iron Man 3" was released, there has still been no word from Marvel on whether or not it is coming out with another "Iron Man" stand-alone film.

With no official confirmation of a possible "Iron Man 4," speculations have run rampant, from the possibility that Robert Downey, Jr. is asking for a salary that is too steep for Marvel to the fact that the actor may simply be too old to reprise his role as the iron-clad Avenger.

Recently, reports have also come out suggesting that Downey, Jr. may be ditching "Iron Man 4" in favor of a third installment to the Guy Ritchie-directed "Sherlock Holmes" series of films, in which he co-stars with Jude Law. According to these reports, Downey, Jr. is currently too busy with "Sherlock Holmes 3" and other projects to star in a fourth "Iron Man" film. Though there have been reports that the third "Sherlock Holmes" film is already filming, there is currently no official release date for it.

Apart from the suggestion that Downey, Jr. may be focusing on "Sherlock Holmes 3," there has also been talks that "Iron Man 4" may not push through because the actor has been negotiating for a pay increase that Marvel has yet to agree to. The "Avengers: Age of Ultron" actor is, after all, one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, earning $33 million in 2016, according to Forbes.

Reports suggest that in the absence of an agreement with Downey, Jr., Marvel may choose to replace the actor. Instead, the studio could introduce a new character in "Iron Man 4" to replace Tony Stark and take on the mantle of Iron Man. Riri Williams, the new comic-book Iron Man, is a possible replacement for Stark.

Though Downey, Jr. may not appear in a potential "Iron Man 4," fans can still look forward to his roles in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" (2017) and "Avengers: Infinity War (2018)."
